Thursdays 14:30 – 16:00 CET
The ISEED Webinar Series Inclusion, Science & Democracy explores intersections between science, knowledge-based democratic governance and the inclusion of, especially minoritised, knowledges and people as part of democratic deliberation and governance.
Talks will take place on Thursdays at 2.30-4pm CET/ 9.30-11am UTC-3 with occasional adjustments to speakers’ timezones.
The series is jointly coordinated by ISEED partners MEC Uruguay and NTNU.
Webinars with speakers from Uruguay will be provided with a live translation from Spanish to English!
The Series
The task coordinators plan to have a series of episodes, where the first episode has been launched. The remaining episodes are to be confirmed.

Ceibal and the Development of Digital Citizenship among school students in Uruguay
Roberto Porzecanski
Speaker Bio: He is Internationalization Manager, where he leads Ceibal’s strategy and execution in the area of international consulting. He holds a degree in International Studies (Universidad ORT, 2002), a Diploma in Economics (Universidad de la República, 2003) and a PhD in International Relations (2010) from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, where he attended with a Fulbright scholarship.
Webinar Overview: There will be an institutional presentation of Ceibal: What has been its evolution, its main areas of action and institutional developments. The process of scaling up its activities from the local to the national level will be mentioned, as well as the diversification of its programs and projects. In addition, the path taken by Ceibal in the development of Digital Citizenship with teacher training programs and skills for the exercise of full citizenship from a human rights perspective will be addressed.

Engaging Publics in Science: Ontologies and their implications for Epistemic, Ethical, and Political Concerns
Heather Douglas
Speaker Bio: Heather Douglas is a philosopher of science who works on the relationships among science, values, and democratic publics. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Michigan State University and an American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) fellow.
Webinar Overview: Because of the essential role of values in science, engagement with science is needed for democratic legitimacy and is a crucial tool for building trust. But the public is not a monolithic entity; there are different conceptualizations of “public” used in the practices of public engagement. I will discuss several different conceptualizations of “public” and show that they are different ontological publics, differences with important epistemic, ethical, and political implications.

Democracy, Diversity, and Trust in Experts
Mark Brown
Speaker Bio: Mark Brown is professor in the Department of Political Science at California State University, Sacramento. He is the author of Science in Democracy: Expertise, Institutions, and Representation (MIT Press, 2009), and various publications on the politics of expertise, political representation, climate change, and the politics of identity. He teaches courses on modern and contemporary political theory, democratic theory, and the politics of science, technology, and the environment.
Webinar Overview: Democracy depends on trust, but it also requires healthy forms of mistrust. Mistrust in experts is primarily caused by people’s sense that experts pose a threat to their values, interests, and identities. This presentation will examine the relation between social identities and trust in experts.

Lived Experience Storytelling as a tool for enhancing Local Democracy
Hayley Trowbridge
Speaker Bio: Hayley is a Research Fellow at Cardiff University and CEO of People’s Voice Media. Hayley has worked across the UK and Europe to dismantle hierarchies and find more equitable ways of working in the broad domains of research, policy and services. In her research, she specialises in participatory and creative research methods, with an emphasis on lived experience and co-production practices.
Webinar Overview: Stories are powerful tools through which we connect, learn and build bridges. They can also be important catalyst for social change. Within this field of storytelling for social justice, Community Reporting has emerged. Originating in 2007, Community Reporting is an approach to digital storytelling that has been developed by People’s Voice Media as a tool for supporting communities, services and organisations to work responsibly and effectively with people’s lived experience.
